Anointing of the sick is the second sacrament of healing. "To heal" means "to make whole." Through this sacrament God fills in the holes we create by sinning, making us whole again.
God always heals our souls. Sometimes God heals both our bodies and spirits to make us whole in both. Anointing of the sick is how that happens. It is the perfect cure because we are made whole again. Only God can make us whole.
The word "salvation" comes from the Latin word "Salus," which means health or well-being. When God offers us salvation, He offers us perfect health and well-being. Only God can give us this perfect health and salvation.

The Jews of the Old Testament believed that healing is also conversion from sin to salvation. In other words, turning to God brings us to healing, health and wholeness. They also believed that sin was linked with death, just as we believe that sin kills our relationship with God.
One story in the Old Testament that pre-shadows the anointing of the sick is the story of Job. Job was a rich and righteous man. He had seven sons, three daughters, 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen and 500 donkeys. In order to test his faithfulness God took away all of Job's children and possessions. Job still remained faithful. Then God caused boils to appear all over Job's body. Job's neighbors came and criticized him, saying that he must have been a bad man for all those terrible things to happen to him. But Job still remained faithful. Then God saw the depth of Job's faithfulness and healed him. God restored his children and possessions to him. Job was faithful and God made him whole again. Faith keeps us whole.

Jesus healed many sick people during his ministry. He did this to show that he was the Son of God but also because He had genuine compassion for the suffering of people.
The Gospel of Matthew tells us that "...when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick." (Matthew 14:14)
The Gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus healed more than the bodies of suffering people. Jesus said that “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18)
