OLD TESTAMENT CONNECTION
http://77elements.net/
In the Old Testament the Hebrew prophets would anoint their priests and kings with oil to signify consecration. Moses was commanded by God to anoint Aaron and his sons as priests. The prophet Samuel anointed both Saul and David as kings of Israel.
The Bible describes the anointing of David as King of Israel: "Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward" (1 Sam. 16:13)

PENTECOST / NEW TESTAMENT CONNECTION
By Photobucket
After Jesus died on the cross, the apostles weren't sure what to do. Jesus wasn't with them anymore in body. They were afraid.
They were huddling together in the upper room of a house. At sunset on the day we now call Pentecost the Holy Spirit came down to the apostles to strengthen them and give them courage.
The Holy Spirit appeared as tongues of fire over the heads of those in the room.

SOLDIER CONNECTION

Confirmation makes you brave!
After you are confirmed you can feel strong enough to spread and defend the teachings of our Catholic faith. Through Confirmation the Holy Spirit gives you spiritual strength to speak up for your Church and defend your faith like a soldier defends his country.
In the old days before the Church Council called Vatican II, the bishop used to slap the person being confirmed lightly on the cheek. This was to remind us that the way of the cross is sometimes hard and requires us to be brave and strong.

CONNECTION TO BAPTISM

The grace you receive in Baptism's is deepened by Confirmation. In Confirmation you are united more closely to God. The special and unique gifts you have received through the Holy Spirit are increased and your bond with God is perfected.
Confirmation gives you the courage to confess your religion (speak up for what you believe in) and carry your cross (bear your troubles.)

SACRAMENT OF INITIATION
http://liturgicalyear.wordpress.com/2011/04/23/holy-week
Confirmation is a Sacrament of Initiation where a new member is welcomed into the Church. If the person entering the Church is an adult he or she receives Baptism, Confirmation and Communion all at the same ceremony, usually at the Easter Vigil.
AGE OF REASON

At what age is a person usually confirmed? In the case of an adult it can be at any age. But for people who have been baptized as infants you must reach the "age of reason" before you can be confirmed. The age of reason is determined by the Bishop of your Diocese.
The Diocese of Boise says that you must be at least in grades 9 or 10 (and already baptized as an infant and suitably prepared.)

WHO CAN ADMINISTER
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop
Normally the Bishop of your Diocese will confirm you. But in an emergency, a priest designated by the bishop can administer the Sacrament of Confirmation.
CEREMONY
http://www.ctrcc.org/sacraments/confirm.htm
During the ceremony of Confirmation you will renew your baptismal vows and profess your faith.
Then the Bishop will extend his hands over you to symbolize the gift of the Holy Spirit. He recites a prayer and then anoints your head with the oil of chrism, saying "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit."
Then the Bishop will extend his hands over the whole group of people being confirmed. Since the time of the apostles this gesture has symbolized the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 8:17 it says "Then Peter and John placed their hands on the and they received the Holy Spirit."

SPONSORS
By alongway99, photobucket
As in baptism, you have people to help you in your faith. For Confirmation you will need a sponsor (like you needed a godparent at Baptism.) Oftentimes one of your godparents can be your Confirmation sponsor. But if that is not possible for some reason you should look for someone whose faith is shared and who will be around to help you, and/or speak openly with you about religion.
The requirements for a sponsor are the same as for a godparent:

- A Confirmed Catholic
- At least 16 years old
- A practicing members of the Church
- NOT either of your parents
